Program Structure

Curriculum

The Global Scholars curriculum is applicable to real-life circumstances and helps students navigate unspoken topics, features guest speakers, and pushes students to improve various academic skills. The curriculum is also designed to provide and grow transferable skills useful not only for the Global Scholars Program but for future endeavors. Some of these transferable skills include community involvement, connections across majors, resume builder, undergraduate research, leadership skills, writing skills, teamwork, networking, and marketing global experiences.

You will learn critical skills and techniques for applying to study abroad programs and scholarships. Skills and techniques that work phenomenally because they helped me get into a program I would have never been accepted into had it not been for everything I learned from being a part of the Global Scholars Program.

Engagement begins during winter quarter with a series of workshops. Class activities during spring and autumn quarters are paired with an immersive study abroad or internship program during the summer. At the end of the year-long program, Global Scholars are recognized for their commitment and achievements as leaders with the ability to ethically engage with different cultural perspectives in the larger global community. Students in the program can leverage their involvement with and status as Global Scholars to become more competitive in getting into a major or pursuing leadership/ employment opportunities.

The Global Scholars team supported me inside and outside of the class and after my graduation from the cohort: I became the first UWB McNair Scholar, have an on-campus position as Program and Research Assistant, and am applying to postgraduate opportunities. The Global Scholars Program is a unique experience that offers support not found in traditional classroom settings and has been the highlight of my college career.

Global Scholars Courses

BIS 318 Global Scholars: Foundations and Preparation

Spring Quarter: Mondays, 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Course Purpose and Learning Outcomes:

The Global Scholars Program at the University of Washington Bothell unites students of diverse backgrounds to investigate and explore questions of diversity, difference, and identity in and across global engagements. The purpose of this course is to introduce students in the Global Scholars Program to issues in global learning and intercultural communication as informed by the concepts of culture, community, and inequality. Having either already selected or being in the process of selecting different opportunities for internships and study abroad, students in this course will explore and reflect on different ideas about what it means to have a “global learning experience.” This course combines online content with weekly in-class meetings. Students should expect to spend two hours per week completing the assigned online work outside of class meeting times which will include the submission of written reflections and comments on peer reflections.
