This was a program that supported classes with funds to bring in guest speakers or cover special project costs. This program is now closed.

Connected Learning Course Fund – Past Projects

Previous courses supported by Connected Learning Course Fund may give you an idea of what have been funded and for what amounts. This list is not comprehensive.

2023-2024

  • Nora Kenworthy, Associate Professor, School of Nursing and Health Studies, Winter 2023, BHS 510 – Winter 2024, Health Policy, Systems, and Advocacy. BHS 510 is a course for understanding the policies and policymaking structures that shape the health of our communities. Funds will cover student memberships to Washington State Public Health Association (our community partner for the course), and travel costs for students participating in the WSPHA legislative education day, $500.
  • Min Tang, Associate Teaching Professor, Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, Fall 2023, Critical Media Literacy, BIS235. This course has a community engagement and collaborative learning project through collaboration with the Northshore School District’s Racial and Educational Justice Team, to develop media education workshops for local high school students. Support covers guest lectures, $225.
  • Laura Umetsu, J.D., Instructor, School of Business, Fall 2023, Business Writing, BBUS 307A. Student teams interview client stakeholders and create website educational and promotional content for community engagement learning partner the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Seattle. Cost covers guest speakers and writing coach, $500.
  • Jong Yoon, Associate Professor, Mechanical engineering coordinator, School of STEM/Engineering & Math Division, Summer – extension of BME 496 Capstone Project in Mechanical Engineering I of spring 2023 , Workshop support (summer event), $500.

2022-2023

  • Nora Kenworthy , Associate Professor, School of Nursing and Health Studies, BHLTH 423, Spring 2023. Global Health: Critical Perspectives, for community partner consultation work with class and mentorship of student work, $500.
  • Victoria Breckwich Vasquez, DrPH, MPH, MA – UW Bothell Lecturer (Part-Time) & LETI LLI Mentor, School of Nursing &Health Studies, Spring, BHLTH 498B, Latinx Leadership Initiative (LLI) at UW Bothell. Workshop support $120.
  • Laura Umetsu, J.D., Instructor, School of Business, Spring 2023, BBUS 307. Student teams interview client stakeholders and create website educational and promotional content based on these interviews for community engagement learning partner the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), $200.
  • Natalia Dyba, Connected Learning, BFSTDY 300 Summer 2023, Stipend to supporting Indian youth (through Pravah) who interface with our students during the course of their projects, $500.
  • Laura Umetsu, BUS, BBUS 307A Summer, Stipend for three guest community speakers, $500.
    Raissa DeSmet, IAS, BIS 498 Summer: Undergraduate Research – Southeast Asian Pasts and Futures (SEAPF), Graphic design and printing for digital and limited print copies for zine featuring student writing/creative work, $500.

2021-2022

  • Jody Early, NHS, BHS 496 HS Fieldwork, Stipend to recent HS alum to support course as peer coach, $500.
  • Laura Umetsu, BUS, BBUS 307 Business Writing, Honoraria for three guest community speakers, $500.
  • Nora Kenworthy, NHS, BHLTH 423, Student stipends to the winning team to continue their work with the stakeholders to encourage implementation, $500.
  • Victoria Breckwich Vasquez, NHS, BHLTH 498A: LETI Latinx Leadership Initiative, Mentoring supplies (various such as journals for reflective writing, short stories about/by Latinx leaders, pens, workbooks, etc.) , and graduation celebration supplies (papel picado, cutlery, dishes, certificate envelopes) to recognize participating Bothell High School Latinx club youth, $500.
  • Deborah Hathaway, FYPP, BLEAD 102 A: Working in Teams, The ABC and the “Working in Teams” class will be creating the ABC Spring Carnival event for ABC’s Open House. Students will be developing and leading booths with activities and games for the students at the center. Each group in the class is allocated approximately $100 for their booth (5 total groups), $500.
  • Jin-Kyu Jung, IAS, BIS352 Mapping Communities, Community partner (LETI) consultation work with course, $300.

2020-2021

  • Joseph Ferrare, IAS, BIS 232 Visualizing Quantitative Data, $500
    Student assistant to support CBLR project logistics.
  • Victoria Breckwich Vasquez, NHS, BHLTH 222: Latinx Health & Culture, $500
    Stipend for three community guest speakers.
  • Victoria Breckwich Vasquez, NHS, BHLTH 498: LETI Latinx Leadership Initiative, $500
    Honararia for 1 alum mentor.
  • Deborah Hathaway, FYPP, BCORE 120 B: Working in Teams, $500
    Payment to Silver Kite Community Arts who will help provide an orientation to the students and also help coordinate and lead the program with ECA.
  • Jin-Kyu Jung, IAS, BIS406 Urban Planning and Geography, $300
    Grocery gift cards to the local participants as a compensation for participating the survey.
  • Kari Lerum , NHS, BIS 341: Girls on Film, $500
    Cover the costs for all students to gain access to designated films from Cascadia International Women’s Film Festival and a stipend for a filmmaker guest speaker.
