Rejoice Akapame, Associate Professor & Faculty Fellow for DEIJ

Biography

Dr. Akapame received her PhD in Mathematics Education from Montana State University Bozeman in 2012 and both her MSc Ed in Mathematics in 2006 and BSc Ed in Mathematics & Geography in 2002 from Bindura University of Science Education. She joined UW Bothell in 2015. Prior to UW Bothell, she was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Research

Dr Akapame is a mathematics teacher at heart. Thus, her research interests have focused on the need to make mathematics accessible to all learners through mathematical modeling, use of technology in K-16 mathematics instruction, pedagogical strategies for supporting English Language Learners (ELLs) and mathematics coaching. Currently, she is exploring the use of Scratch as a mathematical modeling tool in grades 6-8 with an emphasis on applying computational thinking in solving everyday problems.
