Faculty

Our Physical Science faculty combine combine cutting-edge research expertise with dynamic, hands-on teaching to ensure that our students develop the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

Research

Research in the Physical Sciences Division covers a broad spectrum of applied Chemistry, Physics, and Earth System Science. Faculty investigate diverse topics, including the discovery of new disease-curing drugs, the global movement and chemical processes of air pollutants, and the life cycles of stars in our solar system. Some faculty focus on advancing best practices in Physics and Chemistry education. Many have received national recognition for their contributions and have secured highly competitive research grants from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, NASA and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Chemistry

Explore the atomic and molecular nature of our world

All of life is made of atoms and molecules. UW Bothell chemists explore the atomic and molecular nature of the world in order to understand life and the universe, our impacts on the environment, and how to make the world better. We also make a lot of liquid nitrogen ice cream.

Physics

Explore how our planet is shaped through natural and human processes

The Bachelor of Arts in Physics, Bachelor of Science in Physics, and Physics Minor give students the opportunity to master fundamental laws and model-building techniques, awaken them to the power of the universe, and support knowledge in mathematics, engineering and other fields. Physics students develop skills that are highly valued in industry and all types of organizations, including numeracy, problem solving, data analysis and the communication of complex ideas.

Earth Systems Science

Exploring the fundamental forces that control our universe

The Earth System Science (ESS) major at the University of Washington Bothell offers students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the planetary processes that create, change or destroy livable habitats. Classroom activities and hands-on field research allows students to observe and interpret how the Earth’s atmosphere, ocean and land surfaces interact and impact human and environmental health. The ESS degree program is jointly administered by the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS) and the School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) with teaching and research contributions from faculty members in both schools.
