Background

Dr. Jong Yoon is an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering and received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 2009. Prior to joining UW Bothell School of STEM in 2014, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Qatar University, Qatar, and led Smart Medical Devices Lab (SMDL). From 1997 to 2001, he was with Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Korea, as a research engineer and designed various precision motors for information and optical devices. Dr. Yoon has 15 peer reviewed journal papers and 20 peer reviewed conference proceedings.

Research

His research interests focus on the design and development of mechatronics systems and their applications in biomedical devices. His current research lab at the University of Washington Bothell, Smart Medical Devices Lab, is highly active in research; our team (undergraduate students at UW Bothell and graduate students at collaborating institutions) designs, simulates, builds, and assesses different smart devices in a variety of domains. There are three on-going research topics: 1) multi-modal medical diagnostic devices, 2) minimally invasive surgical robotics and smart user interface, and 3) assistive technologies (neural interface and assistive devices). His research is topical and characterized by a strong interdisciplinary focus and targets for more practical and applicable engineering solutions in medical device applications.
