General Scholarships

UWB General Scholarship
Deadlines: December, April
Multiple scholarships ranging from $750-$3,500 are awarded to UWB students across all disciplines based on financial need and merit. International students are welcome to apply.

Mary Gates Leadership and Research Scholarships
Deadlines: October, January
Multiple $4,000 scholarships, paid over two quarters, are given to full-time UW undergraduate students pursuing a leadership and/or research project. International students are welcome to apply.

Morris K. and Stewart L. Udall Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship UW Internal Deadline: November
Eighty scholarships of up to $5,000 and 50 honorable mentions of $350 to students committed to careers related to the environment, tribal public policy, or Native American health care. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents with at least a B average.

Sterling and Gene Munro Public Service Fellowship
Deadline: November
Fellowship awards range from $2000 to $4000 to encourage students to life-long commitment to public service by giving them the opportunity to step foot into the community. Students will be selected in December of the year of application and will be awarder Winter and Spring quarter. Students must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA and commit to a weekly meeting during the two quarters.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund
Deadlines: December-February
Multiple scholarships to help Hispanic-Americans complete their education. Applicants must be of Hispanic heritage, U.S. citizens, permanent resident or be granted DACA, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be enrolled full-time for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship UW Internal
Deadline: November
Up to 300 scholarships of $7,500 are awarded annually to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in these fields. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents with solid research experience and a strong GPA.

Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Program Deadline: December
Sponsored by the Department of Defense, this program provides full scholarships to students in STEM fields and offers summer internships and mentoring, in exchange for employment with the government after graduation. Applicants must be US citizens.

The UW Class of 1954 Achievement Scholarship
Deadline: Early April
Several $1,500-$2,500 awards for outstanding UW students who, by their achievements and goals, enrich society and themselves. Applicants must be juniors or seniors with a 3.3 minimum GPA and financial need, and propose a relevant extracurricular project.

The Class of 1957 Scholar Award
Deadline: Early April
Three $1,500 awards sponsored by the UW Alumni Class of 1957. Applicants must be sophomores, juniors or non-graduating seniors as of autumn quarter, have a 3.3 minimum GPA and financial need as indicated by the Financial Aid Office, and be able to demonstrate academic merit through involvement in activities relevant to their academic, career and/or professional goals.

The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship
Deadline: Mid-February
Three thousand $1,000 scholarships funded by Boeing, Microsoft and Washington State Legislature to help students earn their first bachelor’s degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and health care. Applicants must be low- and middle-income Washington State residents enrolled full-time with a minimum GPA of 2.75.

Study Abroad Funding Opportunities

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Deadlines: October, March
Funded by US Congress, the Gilman program aims to bring diversity to study abroad. Non-traditional destinations are preferred and programs must be at least 4 weeks. Applicants must be US citizens who are receiving a Federal Pell Grant.

GO! Scholarship
Deadlines: October, April
The GO! Scholarship is funded by the WA Legislature to support students with financial need. Applicants must be WA state residents eligible for Husky Promise or a Federal Pell Grant.

Fritz Undergraduate Scholarship
Deadlines: October, April
Multiple awards are funded each year by the Chester Fritz Endowment. Applicants must full-time UW students, majoring in the Humanities or Social Sciences, and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Boren Undergraduate Scholarships
Deadline: Early January
Funded by the National Security Education Program, Boren Scholarships allow undergraduates to study less commonly taught languages and cultures in regions critical to US national security interests. The scholarship offers up to $20,000 for year-long programs. Applicants must be US citizens. Recipients commit to work for the federal government for one year post-graduation.


The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships and Internships
Deadline: End of January
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a variety of opportunities for Americans to study, conduct research, or work in Germany, including study abroad scholarships, summer study programs, and research internships in science and engineering. Proficiency in German may be required.

Fulbright Summer Institutes in the UK
Deadline: March
The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers fully funded, 4-6 week study abroad programs at prestigious British institutions to promote Americans’ understanding of the UK. Freshmen and sophomores who are US citizens, have a 3.5+ GPA, and have limited international experience are encouraged to apply.

Funded Research Opportunities

Amgen Scholars Program in Biomedical Sciences
Deadline: February
Fully funded, 9-week summer research immersion internship, hosted at UW, for students interested in gaining biotechnology research experience and exploring the biosciences as a career. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents with a GPA of at least 3.2 and interest in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.

Research Experience for Undergraduates
Deadlines: February – April
The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds research sites all over the country and abroad to promote undergraduate engagement in research. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents, have a strong GPA and interest in graduate studies. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel.

UW Summer Institute in the Arts & Humanities
Deadline: March
A unique opportunity for selected undergraduates to earn full-time, academic credit through immersion in scholarly research with accomplished scholars and peers. Focused on a different topic each summer, the program brings together four faculty and twenty students in plenary, seminar and tutorial-style sessions mid-June through mid-August. Recipients receive $4,000.

Other Enrichment Programs

Charles B. Rangel Summer Enrichment Program in Washington, DC
Deadline: February
The Rangel Summer Program for students interested in international affairs provides academic credit, networking with government agency professionals, and invaluable professional experience. The award covers tuition, room, board, and travel. Applicants must be US citizens, full-time undergraduate freshman, sophomore, or junior students with a GPA of at least 3.2.

Ronald E. McNair Program
Deadline: May
A mentoring and professional development program to assist underrepresented students in preparing for doctoral study through involvement in research and scholarly activities. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents, low-income, first- generation, African American, Latino/Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, or Native American, UW students with at least one year of undergraduate study remaining, with a strong interest in pursuing a PhD.
