Luce Scholars Program

UW Internal Deadline: September
Provides fully-funded year-long placements in Asia, including stipends, language training, and tailored work assignment, for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia. Applicants must be US citizens under 30, in good health, who will have completed a Bachelor’s degree by the start of the grant.

Fulbright US Student Program: Research and English Teaching Assistantship (ETA)
UW Internal Deadline: September Post-graduate opportunities funded by the US Department of State, to spend a year abroad doing research, graduate studies, or teach English in over 155 countries worldwide. Applicants must be US citizens.

Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program
Deadline: November
Two-year, post-graduate leadership development program, sponsored by the federal Office of Personnel Management, for top students with advanced degrees interested in government service. Program combines paid work assignments with classroom training and development opportunities. Applicants must be US citizens or in the process of obtaining US citizenship.

Carnegie Endowment Junior Fellowship
Deadline: November
One-year, paid opportunity to work as a junior researcher at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC. Applicants must have excellent credentials and submit a thought paper on one of the Endowment’s focus areas, including current issues in the Middle East, Russia and Eurasia, China, the Indian subcontinent/South Asia, democratic change, international economics, non-proliferation and security affairs. Must be authorized to work in the US.

Truman Scholarship
Deadline: November
The Truman is a prestigious national scholarship to fund graduate study for individuals deeply committed to public service. Applicants must be a U.S citizen, a full-time student pursuing a bachelor’s degree with at least junior-level academic standing. Applicant should exhibit interests in working with government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or education institutions.

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship Program

Deadline: November
Fellowship program is targeted at preparing undergraduate juniors and rising seniors from diverse backgrounds for graduate program studies in public and/or international affairs. Program also offers the opportunity to providing the skills needed for professional roles in public service. Open to students of all majors who have not attained a Bachelor’s Degree prior to the state of the program. Students must show commitment towards completing a master’s degree within one the PPIA graduate schools.

Boren Awards
UW Internal Deadline: January
Boren Awards encourage students to study less commonly taught languages and cultures in regions critical to US national security interests. The scholarship offers up to $20,000 for undergraduates and $30,000 for graduate students for year-long programs. Applicants must be US citizens. Recipients commit to work for the federal government for one year post-graduation.

The Autry Fellowship

Deadline: January

This fellowship provides an opportunity for undergraduate seniors or recent graduates to work for one year as a full-time, paid staff member at MDC. Students’ interest must align with MDC’s mission which is to support organizations and communities in the South and bring people closer to opportunities by developing young leaders with experience in economic development, increasing equity and excellence in education, and more. Applicant must be a U.S. resident who has had prior work in a related field to the mission.

Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

Deadline: January
Funded by the US Department of Education and administered by the Jackson School of International Studies, FLAS Fellowships support undergraduate, graduate and professional students in acquiring modern foreign languages and area or international studies competencies. The scholarship offers up to $15,000 for undergrads and $33,000 for grad students for programs that include intensive foreign language study in the US or abroad. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. Students from all departments and professional schools are encouraged to apply.

Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship
Deadline: January
Opportunity to gain a Washington perspective on issues of peace and security. Fellows serve as full-time junior staff members at a participating organization of their choice in D.C. for six to nine months. Designed for people who have already demonstrated a strong interest in considering a career working on international peace and security issues with public-interest organizations, the Federal Government, academia, or media. Baccalaureate degree required by the time the fellowship commences. Preference given to U.S. citizens, although fellowships to foreign national residents of the U.S. are awarded periodically.

Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs

Deadline: January
Full-time, nine month, graduate-level experiential leadership training program, including an academic component that prepares diverse, talented and committed individuals for effective and ethical leadership in the public affairs arena. Offered in Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and St. Louis. Placements begin in September. Around 70 fellows are selected each year.

Emerson National Hunger Fellowship

Deadline: January
This fellowship allows students to gain field experience fighting hunger and poverty through placements in community based organizations across the country, and policy experience through placements in Washington, D.C. Open to students who are committed to social justice and anti-racism, enthusiastic about participating, and can easily adapt to new situations. Applicants should have some experience with anti-hunger or anti-poverty work and must be citizens or permanent legal residents of the US.

Humanity in Action Internship

Deadline: January
Summer Program in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Lyon and Warsaw. Selected applicants will be given the opportunity to learn about minority rights and be able to start their own research targeted at how and why individuals and societies have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values. Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduate students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors), or recent graduates (within the last two years). Both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.

Payne International Development Fellowship

Deadline: January
Up to $90,000 awarded towards two years for graduate school, internships, and professional development activities. Award covers tuition, fees, and stipend to cover all required expenses. Open to students who are interested in pursuing careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Upon successful completion of the program, student is asked to join the USAID Foreign Service. Applicants must be U.S. citizens seeking admission to enter graduate school in the Fall for a two-year program at a U.S. university. Applicant must be at least a graduating senior with a minimum grade point average of 3.2. Applicants who have been historically underrepresent in international development careers and those with financial need are encouraged to apply.

Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowships
Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowship Program

Funding for graduate studies in foreign affairs and professional preparation to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be US citizens, juniors, seniors or recent graduates, with a 3.2+ GPA.

Charles B. Rangel Summer Enrichment Program in Washington, DC

Funding for graduate studies in foreign affairs and professional preparation to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be US citizens, juniors, seniors or recent graduates, with a 3.2+ GPA.

Fulbright Summer Institutes in the UK

The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers fully funded, 4-6 week study abroad programs at prestigious British institutions to promote Americans’ understanding of the UK. Individuals with limited international experience are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be Freshmen and Sophomores who are US citizens, have a 3.5+ GPA

PeaceCorps

Deadline: Rolling
Started by President Kennedy and supported by US Congress, the Peace Corps sends US citizens on two-year assignments to work with local communities all over the world in the following areas: education, youth outreach, and community development; business development; agriculture and environment; health and HIV/AIDS; and information technology. The program provides training, a monthly stipend and health benefits, loan deferment and a stipend upon completion of service.

Institute on Philanthropy & Voluntary Service

Deadline: Rolling
Educates undergraduate students in ways consistent with the American traditions of philanthropy and individual responsibility. The residential program is held at Georgetown University from June – August. You have the opportunity to be with 70 students from around the world who are all passionate about service and affecting change in their communities. The intensive schedule is designed to maximize your time in Washington by combining learning in the classroom with practical internship experience.
