General Scholarships

UWB General Scholarship
Deadlines: December, April
Multiple scholarships ranging from $750-$3,500 are awarded to UWB students across all disciplines based on financial need and merit. International students are welcome to apply.

Mary Gates Leadership and Research Scholarships
Deadlines: October, January
Multiple $4,000 scholarships, paid over two quarters, are given to full-time UW undergraduate students pursuing a leadership and/or research project. International students are welcome to apply.

Edward E. Carlson Leadership Award
Deadline: Early April
One award of $2,500 is given each year to recognize a UW student who has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service, provided outstanding leadership in the community, and who is committed to continued creative civic participation.

The UW Class of 1954 Achievement Scholarship
Deadline: Early April
Several $1,500-$2,500 awards for outstanding UW students who, by their achievements and goals, enrich society and themselves. Applicants must be juniors or seniors with a 3.3 minimum GPA and financial need, and propose a relevant extracurricular project.

The Class of 1957 Scholar Award
Deadline: Early April
Three $1,500 awards sponsored by the UW Alumni Class of 1957. Applicants must be sophomores, juniors or non-graduating seniors as of autumn quarter, have a 3.3 minimum GPA and financial need as indicated by the Financial Aid Office, and be able to demonstrate academic merit through involvement in activities relevant to their academic, career and/or professional goals.

Post-Graduate Study Abroad

Luce Scholars Program UW Internal
Deadline: September
Provides fully-funded year-long placements in Asia, including stipends, language training, and tailored work assignment, for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia. Applicants must be US citizens under 30, in good health, who will have completed a Bachelor’s degree by the start of the grant.

Fulbright US Student Program: Research and English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) UW Internal
Deadline: September
Post-graduate opportunities, funded by the US Department of State, to spend a year abroad doing research, graduate studies, or
teach English in over 155 countries worldwide. Applicants must be US citizens.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships and Internships
Deadline: End of January
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a variety of opportunities for Americans to study, conduct research, or work in Germany, including study abroad scholarships, summer study programs, and research internships in science and engineering. Proficiency in German may be required.

Graduate Study in the UK
UW Internal Deadline: April
The Churchill, Gates Cambridge, Marshall, Mitchell and Rhodes scholarships are the most prestigious merit scholarships that provide funding for students interested in attending graduate school in the UK. Competitive applicants are US citizens with a 3.7 GPA and a record of leadership and participation in extra-curricular activities (academic, research, internships, service, study abroad), who have obtained a baccalaureate degree by the start of the grant. International students may apply for the Gates Cambridge and the Rhodes Scholarships. Some age restrictions may apply.

Graduate School Funding

Knowles Science Teaching Foundation Fellowship
Deadline: January
The KSTF Fellowship is focused on helping beginning teachers grow and develop into a community of scholars of high school science and mathematics teaching. The five-year support program provides tuition, monthly stipends, mentoring, and professional development. Applicants need to demonstrate science or mathematics content knowledge, commitment to teaching, professional ability and leadership.

Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship
Deadline: End of January
Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship Program
Deadline: End of January
Both opportunities offer funding for graduate study and professional preparation to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be US citizens with a 3.2+ GPA.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship
Deadline: Early May
Scholarships to students pursuing primary health care professions training in NHSC-eligible disciplines in return for a commitment to provide healthcare to communities in need, upon graduation and the completion of training.

Domestic Fellowships

Carnegie Endowment Junior Fellowship
Deadline: November
One-year, paid opportunity to work as a junior researcher at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC. Applicants must have excellent credentials and submit a thought paper on one of the Endowment’s focus areas, including current issues in the Middle East, Russia and Eurasia, China, the Indian subcontinent/South Asia, democratic change, international economics, non-proliferation and security affairs. Must be authorized to work in the US.

The Villers and Wellstone Fellowships in Health Care Advocacy
Deadline: January
Families USA, a non-profit based in Washington, DC, offers one-year, paid opportunities to work in health care advocacy. The
Villers Fellow will research health care issues, while the Wellstone Fellow will assist with engaging social justice advocates from underrepresented economic, racial and ethnic minority groups. Applicants must demonstrate passion for justice in the healthcare system and have experience working with low-income or other vulnerable communities.

Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs
Deadline: January
Full-time, nine month, graduate-level experiential leadership training program, including an academic component, that prepares diverse, talented and committed individuals for effective and ethical leadership in the public affairs arena. Offered in Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and St. Louis. Placements begin in September. Around 70 fellows are selected each year.

Post-Graduate Service Opportunities

Peace Corps
Deadline: Rolling
Started by President Kennedy and supported by US Congress, the Peace Corps sends US citizens on two-year assignments to work with local communities all over the world in the following areas: education, youth outreach, and community development; business development; agriculture and environment; health and HIV/AIDS; and information technology. The program providestraining, a monthly stipend and health benefits, loan deferment and a stipend upon completion of service.

AmeriCorps
Deadline: Varies
Modeled after the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps is a national service program with placements in nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and faith-based organizations throughout the US. Assignments vary in length, but all provide living expenses, loan deferment and an educational award.

Teach for America
Deadlines: August – February
Teach for America aims to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting high-achieving recent college graduates and professionals to teach for two or more years in low-income communities throughout the US. No former teaching experience is required. The program provides training, salary and health benefits, loan deferment and an AmeriCorps educational award.
