Students of Color Network

The Students of Color New Student Network at UW Bothell is a community in which information, support, and resources are provided for first-year and transfer students who self-identify as people of color. If you are looking to build cultural connections or find safe spaces where your ethnicity/ethnicities are represented, we are here for you! If you also identify with this network or are an ally and would like to join, sign up for our Husky+ session, “Students of Color: Meet and Greet” on August 24th from 3-4pm by registering at this link.

There are a number of resources available in the community and at the University of Washington Bothell for students who identify as people of color. As part of your orientation and transition process, you will have the chance to learn more and connect with this Network and its members.

Resources:

On-Campus:

  • Diversity Center (UW1-173): To support and advocate for minority communities on campus. The purpose of the diversity center is to connect students to resources and foster a safe environment on campus.
  • Cultural and International Clubs: Multiple various cultural clubs such as Black Student Union, International Club, Latinx Student Union, South Asian Student Association, etc. gets you connected with other students who share similar identities.
  • Social Justice & Civic Education: The Social Justice and Civic Education (SJCE) team, within Student Engagement & Activities (SEA), coordinates events and initiatives that promote critical dialogue, educate students on social justice issues, and provide civic engagement opportunities which see students working towards change in their greater community.
  • UW Bothell Counseling Center: (UW1 080): Provides mental health services to all students registered at UW Bothell or Cascadia. Provides support to students who may be experiencing difficulties adjusting to a new environment, and culture shock.

Local:

  • WorkSource: Multiple sites where workshops, hiring events are provided, Everett location has food pantry for students, has e-learning curriculum through Microsoft IT technology, GFCGlobal, helps with resumes, partners with local organizations for other workshops. Provides resources to work with local organizations and helps develop skills for interviewing/applying for jobs, as well as having a food pantry at the Everett location.
  • Snohomish Library/King County Library: Online learning through Brainfuse and Adult Learning Center (provides one-on-one academic coaching, online resources, practice tests), LearningExpress Library (interactive practice exams), Lynda.com (financial literacy, business/management skills), Microsoft Imagine Academy. Helps students of color develop skills such as financial literacy, technology skills, diversity aspects, and provide scholarships.

Additional Resources:

  • UW Alumni Association: offers free online courses based on UW certificates/degree programs, network with Student Alumni Ambassadors, different events held (career, family, social, sports). Can network with alumni, and learn about paths that past students took to succeed as a student
  • Scholarships: University of Washington offers many different scholarships and grants for students with different cultural background, majors, and income levels.
