Registration resources
Once you have attended your Advising & Orientation program you will be able to register for class. Here are some resources to help you get started.
Transfer students are able to register for classes as soon as their Advising & Orientation session is over.
First Year students will be assigned a registration date based on when you meet with your academic advisor. This will be discussed during your advising meeting.
Step 1: Complete the pre-registration steps
Before you can register each quarter, you MUST complete the pre-registration steps. You will review your own person information as well as information from UW, including optional charges, directory release settings, safety and health notices, and other information. Important messages and notifications are displayed on the registration page at the beginning of each quarter. Students must follow all pre-registration steps before registering for courses.

Step 2: Search for courses
There are two search tools you can use to find classes. They both offer unique tools so feel free to use both.
MyPlan – is an academic planning tool for University of Washington students to chart both long and short-term academic paths. Use MyPlan to search for courses, create academic plans to share with an adviser, and run degree audits.

Time Schedule – Use the Time Schedule to find courses offered for the quarter. Courses are displayed by quarter and by campus. You can browse through various college and departmental programs or jump to a specific program using the index at the top of the page.

Step 3: Register
You can register for classes 2 ways

Frequently Asked Questions
These are just a few of the most asked questions. Your academic advisor will be your best resource for specific questions.
- When do I register? Transfer students are able to register for classes as soon as their Advising & Orientation session is over. First Year students will be assigned a registration date based on when you meet with your academic advisor. This will be discussed during your advising meeting.
- What do I do if a class is full? if a course is full, join the waitlist by signing up for open seat alerts on the UW Notify system. This system will text or email you when a seat becomes available.
- What do I do if I need an add code? Entry/Add codes are five-digit random numbers issued to you by academic departments as authorization to add or drop in restricted course sections. If the class is full, please start by contacting the instructor to ask if they would be willing to have you added to the class. If you receive permission, your next step would be to email your academic advisor. In the email include, your name, student ID number, and the SLN for the class you are wanting to add and well as proof that the instructors is willing to have you added to the class.
- How many classes should I take? Typically, a student will take approximately 15 credits per quarter in order to complete a bachelor’s degree in about four years. There is no minimum/maximum number of credits required per quarter. However, to be considered a ‘full time’ student for financial aid purposes and if you are an international student, you need to take at least 12 credits.
- Once I register, can I make changes to my schedule? YES! You can absolutely make changes to your schedule. You can Add and drop classes via MyUW with no restrictions until end of Week 2. After that, be sure to check in Add/Drop/Withdraw deadline for any financial or academic impact a course change may have.
- Am I allowed to take classes on the Seattle or Tacoma campuses? Yes, but there are some things you need to know. First Year students must complete 25 credits here before cross-campus enrolling. Transfer students must complete 15 credits at UW Bothell here before cross-campus enrolling. Once you have completed these credits, there are still a few more things to know so, check out the Office of the Registrar website for more information about cross campus enrollment.
