IAS faculty member Neil Simpkins explores how disabled students experience college writing and the rhetorical tactics they use to navigate higher education. Simpkins advises faculty to use the course syllabus to open dialogue with a student about their needs.

Kristin Gustafson elected to Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication’s teaching committee
Members of the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) elected IAS faculty member Kristin Gustafson to the organization’s Teaching Committee. The 3,700-member professional, nonprofit, international organization is “the oldest and largest alliance of journalism and mass communication educators and administrators at the college level.” Gustafson will serve a three-year term beginning October.

Coronavirus can’t stop debate team
If things had gone as planned, the University of Washington Bothell Speech and Debate Team would have spent the last weekend in March at a national competition in San Diego. Instead, IAS faculty member Denise Vaughan, the team coach, and Jim Hanson, the debate team coach at Seattle University, organized the Online IPDA Championships.

Snohomish County vote tests government class
Young people, as a demographic, are inconsistent voters, if they vote at all. Why don’t they participate in elections as much as older voters? What could election officials do to increase participation? Those were a couple of questions that Snohomish County election officials had for a University of Washington Bothell class in American Government & Politics. The winter quarter course, taught by IAS faculty member Jason Lambacher, worked with the county Department of Elections on seven research and analysis projects.

IAS students engage in multi-media production
Students in Kristin Gustafson’s Multi-media Storytelling in Student Media class produced three live UWave radio shows focused on climate change, international student experience, and tuition. These two-way radio productions involved the BISMCS472 students talking with one another on air about their journalism reporting for the Husky Herald. In addition to the radio shows, the news story about climate change appeared in the December/January Husky Herald issue distributed this week. Students and elders with early-stage memory loss connect through art
IAS faculty member Deborah Hathaway has partnered with Edmonds Center for the Arts and Silver Kite Community Arts to offer elders and UW Bothell freshmen the intergenerational course, “Making Art Together.” Through the course, older adults facing early-stage memory loss will work collaboratively with UW Bothell students to share their experiences and transform their stories into short theatrical performances.
