IAS students publish the 2018 issue of Clamor

Clamor is the campus’s literary and arts journal, focusing on work produce by UW Bothell student and alum. As IAS faculty member and advisor to the students who create Clamor Amaranth Borsuk puts it, “Clamor is essential in building community around the arts on campus. Creative students from across the disciplines see a home for their work between the journal’s covers, and the campus as a whole benefits from the enriching experience of reading the journal.”

IAS student Hannah Horiatis publishes five articles as part of undergraduate research

Hannah Horiatis published five articles as part of her directed study and undergraduate research with faculty member Kristin Gustafson. Mingyou Yang obtains 1st place at regional GIS competition and receives award at UW Undergraduate Research Symposium

Environmental Science student Mingyou Yang obtained 1st place at the Richard 'Dick' Thomas Memorial Student Presentation Competition that was held in Olympia in May 2018. His research was also awarded at the UW Undergraduate Research Symposium by UW’s Population Health Initiative. Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies celebrates its second birthday!

Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (GWSS) students, staff, and faculty, along with supporters at UW Bothell, gathered for a recognition ceremony to celebrate the end of our second year. As is now tradition, the day was dedicated to Dr. Leslie Ashbaugh, beloved colleague who passed away before the degree launched. GWSS faculty member Kris Kellejian shared memories of Leslie and GWSS faculty coordinator Julie Shayne presented student Mica Coronel with the Leslie Ashbaugh Feminist Praxis in Education (LAFPIE) Award.

On May 22, the IAS Circle of Recognition event celebrated the extraordinary achievements and contributions of our students, alumni, and community partners within the academic year. Philip Palios wins Fulbright grant to study in Scotland

Philip Palios, a senior in Culture, Literature & the Arts, has been awarded a yearlong U.S. Student Fulbright grant to enter the master’s degree program in Environment, Culture & Communication at the University of Glasgow, Dumfries campus in southwest Scotland. “As I grew into adulthood, I became more aware of my mortality and more concerned with what I could be doing to make the world a better place within my lifetime,” says Palios. “The biggest issue on my mind was climate change, and I was also thinking about its intersection with poverty.” Read the full feature article on the UW Bothell News page.

Malak Shalabi brings Syrian voices to the West

IAS alum Malak Shalabi (’18, Law, Economics & Public Policy) is featured on the University of Washington homepage today. The article, “Speaking Words of Justice,” looks at Shalabi’s work on sectarian violence in Syria and the voices of Syrian people in the United States. This work started as part of Shalabi’s undergraduate research with IAS faculty member Bruce Kochis, for which she won a Library Research Award.
