BSN Alum Faces Outbreaks in 2 Cities
While still a student, BSN alum Avery Montes De Oca worked as an emergency room nurse at EvergreenHealth and as a travel nurse in Elmhurst. EvergreenHealth, in Kirkland, WA, is the hospital where many nursing home patients were treated in March for COVID-19. When Elmhurst, in Queens, NY, sent out a call for nurses as the coronavirus began to spike, Montes De Oca answered.

BSN Alum founds EastWest Food Rescue
George Ahearn, BSN '00, founded EastWest Food Rescue, bringing food that would have gone to waste in Eastern Washington to distribute to local food banks. In cooperation with community partners, EastWest Food Rescue has saved over 6,800,000 pounds of food and served more than 1,500,00 meals.

QSNA Scholarship: Undergrads & Alumni
The UW School of Nursing has been selected as the first academic partner in the United States to bestow the Queen Silvia Nursing Award (QSNA) for dementia care. Practicing registered nurses who have graduated from any of the three University of Washington nursing programs (UW Seattle, UW Bothell, or UW Tacoma) with a bachelor’s of science in nursing degree and current UW undergraduate student nurses may apply for the scholarship online through November 6, 2020. *Applications must include an idea or solution to addressing COVID-19 challenges in healthcare environment and special merit will be given for submissions that focus on the well-being of elderly and dementia-diagnosed communities.*
