Please tell us about yourself and what led you to UW Bothell and to our program.
I’m currently a nurse in labor and delivery. I’m also a mother of five beautiful children. What led me to UW Bothell was my passion for learning and wanting to continue my education and obtain my BSN in their program. I completed that program and then someone (Mo West) encouraged me to continue and get my masters. I was hesitant at first because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do my masters or obtain my DNP to be a family nurse practitioner. I chose to apply to the Master’s in Nursing Program and I got in! I really loved the convenience of only meeting 5 times per quarter and I don’t live far from the campus. I chose nursing because of my experience during my second labor for my son. I had no support and the nurse was so attentive and by my side. She talked me through the labor and advocated for me as well. This inspired me to become a labor and delivery nurse .
Please tell us about the KCNA scholarship, how you were selected, and how it will impact you.
I remember seeing the program and scholarship throughout my nursing school years and I would always miss the deadline. Reference letters did not ever line up with the deadlines. This time I really paid attention to the details and just went for it. I turned in my application on the last day after hours because I really wanted to be a part of something that makes a big impact. KCNA aligns with my goals of serving the public and advocacy as a nurse. I was selected 1 of 15 out of 42 applicants. This scholarship will allow me to continue within my Master’s program at UW Bothell and helps alleviate any financial stress. I attended the KCNA gala and was very impressed and maybe in the future I will become a member of KCNA.
How did your experience in your coursework help you find your career path or your area of focus?
My coursework provided invaluable insights and hands-on experiences that guided me towards a fulfilling career in perinatal nursing and advocacy. Through my academic studies and practical assignments and fieldwork I gained a deep understanding of maternal and neonatal health which sparked my passion for supporting families during their perinatal period. The foundation that my coursework at UW Bothell established has equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate effectively for maternal and infant well-being and vulnerable populations.
Please tell us about a moment at UW Bothell that you are proud of, what you’ve carried over from your education, or what has fueled your passion.
A moment at UW Bothell that I am particularly proud of occurred during my fieldwork at a women’s shelter, where I had the opportunity to educate the residents on various topics and engage them in active participation. This experience empowered me as a woman, as I connected with the women on a personal level, free of judgement. Dressed in everyday clothes just like them, I approached the situation authentically and was warmly accepted . This acceptance ignited my passion for working with women and vulnerable populations. I found common ground with these women through our shared experiences of overcoming homelessness and domestic violence.
Was there a faculty, staff, or student service that had a positive impact on your success?
Yes, Mo West had a positive impact on my success during my time here at UW Bothell. Mo She is also my mentor while I gain my Master’s degree at UW Bothell. Her dedication to teaching and serving underserved populations is truly inspiring. I applied to the Master’s program in nursing solely because of her encouragement. I had thought my academic journey was over, but thanks to her, I have realized it’s just beginning.
How do you spend your time outside of work/school?
Outside of work and school, I enjoy spending time with my children, husband and our dog Rio. We often go for walks, explore new restaurants, watch movies, or simply relax at home. We especially love walking on the beach and soaking up the occasional sunshine in Washington. I am excited about embarking on new travel adventures with my family.
What else would you like readers to know about you?
I would like readers to know that I am deeply committed to continuous learning and personal growth. No one is perfect. My experiences have shaped me into a compassionate and resilient individual dedicated to making a positive impact in my community. I strive to see the positives in every situation and always keep a smile on my face. I believe that with determination, you can achieve anything, no matter how unattainable it may seem. You have the ability to make it happen.
