Alum, Faculty, and VA Collaborate on Article for the AJN
The American Journal of Nursing will publish an article co-written by one of our School of Nursing & Health Studies alums, an associate professor, and a community partner in September 2016. Denise Eckerlin, BSN 2014, collaborated with faculty member Andrea Kovalesky and Matthew Jakupcak from Veterans Affairs, to author CE: Military Sexual Trauma in Male Service Members. Eckerlin's work on this article began in Dr. Kovalesky's Health of Veterans course. According to Dr. Kovalesky, the "appearance of this article is greatly due to the interdisciplinary nature of UWB, out of which faculty can develop courses that address the pertinent issues of today’s world." Military Sexual Trauma (MST) can impact the mental health of service members and their families, colleagues, and community. The artice examines, "how social stereotypes of masculinity, myths surrounding sexual assault, and military culture and structure often influence a man's interpretation of an attack and his likelihood of reporting the incident or seeking treatment."
