Butch de Castro Selected as American Academy of Nursing Fellow

American Academy of Nursing Fellows are recognized for their extraordinary nursing careers and are some of nursing's most accomplished leaders. Dr. Butch de Castro received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UCLA and completed a joint Master of Science in Nursing / Master of Public Health degree as well as Doctor of Philosophy degree at Johns Hopkins University. He was also a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Illinois – Chicago. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Washington Bothell School of Nursing and Health Studies. He holds adjunct faculty appointments with the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health at the University of Washington (Seattle), serving as Director of the Occupational Health Nursing Program. His expertise is in Public Health Nursing with emphasis in Occupational and Environmental Health. Dr. de Castro’s research focuses on health disparities among immigrant and minority worker populations that result from chronic stressors related to employment and working conditions. He also investigates how work organization factors contribute to risk for occupational-related injury and illness among healthcare workers. His methodologic approaches include using large survey data sets, biological markers of stress, and longitudinal multi-country comparison study design. His teaching incorporates problem-based learning, social justice principles, community advocacy projects, and the use of digital media. In addition to his record as an academic, Dr. de Castro has extensive experience in federal- and state-level occupational health policy from both governmental and labor perspectives having worked at the U.S. Department of Labor – Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Office of Occupational Health Nursing and serving as senior staff for the American Nurses Association, respectively.
