Practical Training
Practical training is an F-1 benefit that allows a student to experience off-campus training (within your field of study). There are two types of practical training. one is for required curricular experiences, the other is for optional experiences. They are not interchangeable. Please carefully consider your options before applying for practical training. Once approved, you will have employment authorization for the length of the training.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
For off-campus experiences that are an integral part of an established curriculum, meaning that it is a required part of the degree or program of study. CPT is not supplemental training experience, but rather an integral part of an established curriculum.
Authorization is provided by ISS. The full processing timeline for CPT is approximately 5 – 10 days.
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
OPT permits students to augment their learning with off-campus experiences in their program of study.
OPT is recommended by ISS and authorized by USCIS. The processing timeline for all types of OPT is roughly 90 – 100 days.
