Requirements and Policies
This website is for School of IAS undergraduate students only. Graduate students should see their Graduate Program Manager and Advisor for support with requirements and policies. Other Undergraduate students at UW Bothell should reach out to their Academic school for support.
Petitions and Forms
See the petitions and forms website for information on submitting Major/Minor petitions, Diversity credit petition, Writing credit petition, IPR petition, Graduation petition, Cross-Campus Registration petition, and the Reinstatement petition. Be sure to discuss with your Academic Advisor any petitions you are submitting.
Course Restrictions
Some courses offered in the School of IAS will be restricted to specific majors only during the Registration Periods. If you are not in the major the course is restricted to, you will not be able to register for the course. If you are in an IAS minor that the course is available for registration, you can email IASAPPLY@uw.edu for registration assistance. See the additional details in MyPlan or in the Time Schedule for specific restrictions and when non-majors may register for a course.
Upper Division Credit Policy
Of the credits applying to major requirements, a specific number of credits must be at the Upper Division (300-400 level). Each major has a minimum number of upper division credits required. See your major website for more information.
Residency Requirement
Of the credits applying to major requirements, 30 credits within your major must be completed in residence at UW Bothell.
Major GPA Requirement
All majors in the School of IAS require at least a 2.00 or higher cumulative GPA of the credits applying to major requirements. The University of Washington requires a cumulative GPA of 2.00 to graduate with a UW degree.
Interdisciplinary Practice & Reflection (IPR)
The IPR requirement can be completed through elective credits or it can overlap with major coursework. See the IPR website for more information about what courses meet the IPR requirement.
Admitted prior to Autumn Quarter, 2024?
Below are the requirements for all School of IAS majors prior to Autumn Quarter 2024. Any questions? See your Academic Advisor.
BIS 300 & BIS 499
BIS 300 Interdisciplinary Inquiry is a required first quarter course for students newly admitted to majors in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences. IAS students who did not register for BIS 300 in their first quarter will receive a hold preventing registration for the future term. Students who did not complete or pass BIS 300 will also receive a BIS 300 Hold.
BIS 499 Portfolio Capstone is required within the last three quarters of a student’s intended graduation. BIS 499 is a writing-intensive (W) course. Students must receive a minimum course grade of 2.5 in the portfolio capstone to graduate
Interdisciplinary Practice & Reflection (IPR)
The IPR requirement can be completed through elective credits or it can overlap with major coursework.
Areas of Inquiry
25 credits must be completed in each Area of Inquiry. The Areas of Inquiry are: Arts and Humanities (A&H), Social Sciences (SSc), and Natural Sciences (NSc).
Multiply-designated courses may not be double-counted as fulfilling two Areas of Knowledge. Courses may apply to both an Area of Knowledge requirement and a major requirement.
Upper Division Credit Policy
Of the credits applying to major requirements, a minimum of 48 must be completed at the Upper Division (300-400) level.
Matriculated status
Courses taken to satisfy IAS major requirements must be completed in matriculated status.
