Abigail Echo-Hawk discusses indigenous research as storytelling on Red Talks
Alum Abigail Echo-Hawk (’09, MA in Policy Studies; ’07, American Studies) shared her approach to research with indigenous populations on “Red Talks,” a video series by Missouri Breaks in partnership with National Congress of American Indians. Echo-Hawk, who serves as Director of Urban Indian Health Institute, discusses how research agendas are often imposed on native populations and how she’s working to change the narrative by engaging tribal communities as storytellers of their own health. Echo-Hawk says, “We go in with humility, and compassion, and understanding that we don’t know what that community needs – they do.” Watch the video and check out Abigail’s work at Urban Indian Health Institute: www.uihi.org.
