Alumni receive Fulbright awards to Estonia and Namibia

Hana Bloedel has been selected for a U.S. Student Fulbright grant to Estonia, where she will serve as an English Teaching Assistant. Hana completed her B.A. in Global Studies and Society, Ethics & Human Behavior, with a minor in Human Rights, in June 2018. During her time at UW Bothell, she studied abroad in London, participated in the D.C. Human Rights Seminar, and was involved in community-based courses. Since her graduation, she has been working as a Student Success Coach at City Year Seattle through the AmeriCorps program.

Mariah Crystal (formerly Ortiz) has been granted a Fulbright award to conduct research in Namibia during the 2019-2020 academic year. She will be analyzing the oral history narratives of Namibian women who contributed the anti-apartheid movement and studying how feminine iconography was deployed to further the Namibian War of Independence. Crystal is a Ph.D. student at the University of Kansas in the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. After completing her M.A. in Policy Studies, Crystal co-led the D.C. Human Rights Seminar with IAS faculty member Ron Krabill and was an international admissions advisor at UW Bothell before joining the Peace Corps to serve two years in Namibia. Says Crystal, “My professors and Policy Studies education are foundational to what I am doing now.”
