Ching-In Chen and Lauren S. Berliner write for Viewpoints series at the Henry

IAS faculty members Ching-In Chen and Lauren S. Berliner were invited to write in response to the work of Dean Sameshima’s Torso (Black on Silver) and Anthony White’s BOYZ OF THE WILD as part of the Henry Art Gallery’s Viewpoints series.

Ching-In Chen’s “Start Here Stacked & Shine for Dean Sameshima’s Torso (Black on Silver) & Anthony White’s BOYZ OF THE WILD” emerged from a process of spontaneous word association grounded in an intuitive emotional response to the artworks.

Lauren S. Berliner’s “Desire in Detail: Seeing Queer in Torso and BOYZ OF THE WILD” reflects on how long it takes “to process the data we have about ourselves and begin to see the contours of our identities.”

This iteration of Viewpoints is organized by Nina Bozicnik, Curator, in collaboration with graduate curatorial assistant Kira Sue, with the intention that the Viewpoints offer Henry visitors different ways of engaging with the work. These written contributions are displayed alongside the work in the gallery presentation and are available on the Henry’s website.
