Jin-Kyu Jung: “Crowdfunding as a response to COVID-19: Increasing inequities at a time of crisis”
IAS faculty member Jin-Kyu Jung published a coauthored article, “Crowdfunding as a response to COVID-19: Increasing inequities at a time of crisis,” in Social Science & Medicine. This collaborative study offers a systematic examination of the scope and impacts of COVID-19 related crowdfunding use and outcomes, using data collected from all US-based GoFundMe campaigns mentioning COVID or coronavirus. The findings of research demonstrate how a market-oriented digital technology and used to respond to large-scale crisis can exacerbate inequalities and further benefit already privileged groups. The paper received attention in both the NY Times and UW News.
