Nicole McCarthy’s book to be published by Heavy Feather Review

Alum Nicole McCarthy’s first book is set to be published in 2022 by Heavy Feather Review. The book is an expansion of McCarthy’s MFA in Creative Writing & Poetics thesis, “Manor of Memory,” which she completed in 2017. “It wouldn't have been the book it is now without my thesis advisor, Renee Gladman, a visiting writer in our MFA program who graciously agreed to work with me,” said McCarthy.

About the book:

Can we re-write a memory? Can we purge those that are a danger to us? This collection muddles the line between fiction and nonfiction, poetry and prose, text and image. Each segment is fragmented but fluid, weaving in and out to show how malleable and unreliable memory can be; how it manifests in the body, mentally, physically, emotionally; how it mutates and betrays as we age. Through a series of scientific and historical essays, poetic meditations, and memory experiments, McCarthy invites the reader to encounter her attempt at rewriting moments of trauma while coming to terms with a family in the early stages of memory loss.

McCarthy is an experimental writer and artist whose work has appeared or is forthcoming in PANK, Hobart, The Offing, Redivider, Glass: a Journal of Poetry, the 2018 Best American Experimental Writing anthology. Her work has also been performed and encountered as projection installation pieces throughout the Puget Sound and can be found at nicolemccarthypoet.com. McCarthy is an Artist Trust GAP award recipient.
