Dan Berger awarded grant to study labor movement origins of affirmative action

IAS faculty member Dan Berger was awarded a Faculty Labor Research Grant by the UW Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies to study the labor movement origins of the fight for affirmative action in the 1960s and 1970s. In particular, he is looking at how working class Black organizers sought affirmative action across three interrelated domains: the university, labor unions, and within nongovernmental organizations. Berger's research is part of a larger biography he is writing of two longtime but little-known organizers, Michael Simmons and Zoharah Simmons.
