Toft awarded top paper for “Talking across movements on Democracy Now!”

IAS faculty member Amoshaun Toft presented two papers at the National Communication Association in Salt Lake City, one of which – “Talking across movements on Democracy Now!” – received the Top Paper award in the Communication as Social Construction division. Building on earlier exploratory research on the Civil Rights movement as narrative bridge, the paper argues that participants marked connections and differences between movement labels in independent broadcast media by demarcating the movement community, locating shared affordances, participants, and tactics, and identifying instances of movement success through language in use.
