Kyra Laughlin receives full scholarship to attend The Women’s Convention in Detroit
This past weekend (October 27-29, 2017) Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (GWSS) alum Kyra Laughlin attended the Women’s Convention in Detroit. The convention, aptly titled “Reclaiming Our Time,” was coordinated by the same women who organized the Women’s March in January 2017 which drew hundreds of thousands of people to rally in support of women’s rights and to resist the multitude of injustices marginalized communities face. Over the span of three days, attendees attended sessions on everything from sexual assault, racial injustices, supporting LGBTQIA+ folks (especially trans women of color), fighting White supremacy and anti-semitism, reproductive justice, and many others.
The Women’s Convention team awarded Kyra a full scholarship to attend the event for her activism on sexual violence as part of her organization Sexual Assault and Violence Education (S.A.V.E) as well as serving as the GWSS student representative last academic year. Organizers of the convention are committed to making the event accessible to all individuals demonstrating a commitment to these issues, regardless of financial barriers, so be sure to keep an eye out for scholarship opportunities for future women’s conventions.
