S. Charusheela and Colin Danby presented their research on “Decentering Race, Gender, and Class – Thinking Beyond Capitalism and Economy”

IAS faculty members S. Charusheela and Colin Danby presented their research on “Decentering Race, Gender, and Class – Thinking Beyond Capitalism and Economy” in Berlin, Germany. Drawing on the work of J.K. Gibson-Graham, they explored how and why gender and race are too often reduced too identity politics, and split away from class, with the result that it remains unclear how, or whether, gender and race are linked to a decentering of capitalism. Their focus was on the ways in which doctrines of gender, race, and colonial modernity are built into contemporary notions of the national and world ”economies.” Danby made the case for reworking modernist categoeries of the local and global, while Charusheela re-opened subjectivity, demonstrating a robust alternative to the opposition of class and identity.
