Kristin Gustafson presents guest lecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst
IAS faculty member Kristin Gustafson presented a guest lecture Oct. 6 at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The presentation "Silence, stories, and resilience: How does the first draft of history matter?" brought together two media-history examples — the first was her analysis of newspaper coverage of a 1920 lynching in Duluth, Minnesota, and the second was Tom Junod's Esquire article about The Falling Man photograph — to explore how hegemony, collective memory, and social construction operate. The students were in Kathy Roberts Forde's History of American Journalism class. Forde is chair of the department.
