Three IAS Students Publish Entry in The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of Gender and Sexuality Studies

IAS undergraduate students Elizabeth Huffaker, Alejandra Pérez, and Jessica Velasquez co-authored an entry called “Chicana Feminism” which was just published in The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of Gender and Sexuality Studies, edited by Nancy Naples. Elizabeth graduated in winter 2016 with a major in Society, Ethics & Human Behavior (SEB) and minor in Human Rights. Alejandra and Jessica will graduate this spring, both with double majors in SEB and American & Ethnic Studies and double minors in Diversity Studies and Education and Society. Alejandra was one of the five UWB students named a Husky 100 and Jessica will be starting graduate study at Seattle University in the MA in Student Development Administration. The three students were mentored by IAS faculty member Julie Shayne.

Alejandra and Jessica met Shayne their first quarter at UWB when they were enrolled in her course “Place and Displacement in the Americas,” co-taught with Jennifer Atkinson. Two years later Alejandra and Jessica were enrolled in Shayne’s section of “Interdisciplinary Inquiry” at which point they met Elizabeth. When Shayne learned about the need for an entry on Chicana Feminism she immediately thought of these three students, due to their established relationship as collaborators and familiarity with the topic.
