Santiago Lopez and David Stokes Publish on Spatial Relationships and Model Plant Invasion Process

IAS faculty members Santiago Lopez and David Stokes published “Modeling the Invasion of Holly (Ilex aquifolium): Spatial Relationships and Spread Trajectories” in the journal The Professional Geographer. The article analyzes through a spatially explicit framework how local environmental conditions, species characteristics, and vegetative and dispersal mechanisms play a significant role in determining success of a plant invasion process in Saint Edwards State Park, WA. Lopez also gave a lightning talk at this year’s GIS Day Conference at UW Seattle. Lopez presented the work students and UW Bothell faculty members have done in the past two years regarding the mapping of vegetation communities and other spatial features in the North Creek wetlands. The conference highlighted and celebrated the transformational role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing Technologies in different aspects of research, teaching, and community service.
