Jennifer Atkinson Publishes on the Sustainability of Humanities Education
IAS faculty member Jennifer Atkinson has published "Multi-Sensory Experience and Environmental Encounter: Rethinking the Sustainability of Humanities Education" in Interdisciplinary Environmental Review's Special Issue on Environmental Justice and Sustainability. The article explores pedagogies that combine studies in literature and philosophy with multisensory environmental experience (outdoor fieldwork and reflection). Drawing from her experience of working with students in IAS, Atkinson emphasizes the role of various forms of outdoor practice as tools for examining rationalist traditions that trivialize embodied experience and estrange our intelligence from the intimacies of everyday contact with non-human nature.
