Kari Lerum Publishes in Sex Roles
IAS faculty member Kari Lerum is the lead author of an article published in the journal Sex Roles. The article, entitled “Sexual agency is not a problem of neoliberalism: Feminism, sexual justice, & the carceral turn,”is part of the journal’s Feminist Forum section, where leading researchers are invited to comment on new theoretical models. In this article, Lerum and her co-author examine the promises and limitations of Laina Y. Bay-Cheng's model of the Agency Line in terms of its contribution to interdisciplinary feminist discussions of young women's sexuality in the U.S.; after laying out their critique they call on progressive feminists to think through sexual agency more carefully by resisting carceral feminist cooptation and supporting sexual justice principles.
