Teaching

My creative practice and scholarship in the areas of visual and experimental art and interactive media – work that is inherently interdisciplinary in that it bridges art practice with adjacent fields – informs my teaching in IAS where I engage enthusiastically with my students in artistic production, discussion, and reflection that draws from the many lived experiences of our diverse student body at UW Bothell. With nearly two decades of teaching experience, I have refined my classroom to provide a platform for the investigation of art and design as modes for production and inquiry in today’s diverse sociocultural discourse. This framing of the role of art in society informs my teaching philosophy: In my classes students engage in art production through experimentation and inquiry of the world around them and find their voice in creating artworks that are personal yet grounded in research and an awareness of cultural and aesthetic frameworks. I consider this critical practice of art making as a form of synthesis – a process that encourages students to transform what they know and how they see the world into concrete artifacts that others can experience. The resulting cycle in this process oscillates between analysis and synthesis, which leads my students into reflective practices. They gain the ability to connect observed issues with existing knowledge and attain new knowledge production as creative practice. My studio courses take a conceptual and experimental approach to art making yet are grounded in formal and aesthetic concerns from diverse and inclusive perspectives. I place equal emphasis on theory and production, using new media technology (video, sound, installation, performance, interactive works) as a vehicle for art making in a cultural context.

Research/Scholarship

I am a practicing artist and experienced educator who bridges artistic practice with scientific research through interactive media installations, predominantly in the format of video and sound art that I install as public art pieces and exhibitions.

Since 2005, I have been creating immersive, artistic installations that explore the relationships between art and science, translating inaudible or invisible phenomena into sensible experiences. Through this translation I am interested in the mediation of the natural world through data streams and how artworks offer an open-ended approach to interfacing and understanding the world around us. In my projects, I make buildings speak about the scientific practices happening within their walls; I transform speakers into small mouths that remind us of histories of technological change; and I turn the practice of embroidery into a tangible, visual residue of spatialized sound derived from oceanographic data.
