Major Description
The Educational Studies major is an interdisciplinary degree program designed for students interested in working with youth, families, and communities in and beyond the classroom. Educational Studies majors explore critical issues in education, including the tensions between education and social justice; child and youth development across social contexts; and how systems of inequity shape teaching and learning. Through community-engaged learning opportunities, Educational Studies majors develop leadership skills to nurture and sustain partnerships with families and communities. Educational Studies majors go on to become change agents who work against inequity and advocate for social change.

Why major in Educational Studies?
Students who major in Educational Studies are interested in:
- Examining power and systems of marginalization that impact communities to understand how education can be a powerful means of social change.
- Understanding the history of education, education policy, and struggles over issues of equity.
- Exploring the rich and diverse contexts of youth development including family, school, community, culture, and digital media, and how children and youth frame their own identities in these spaces.
- Preparing students to work against inequity though a wide range of careers inside and outside the classroom.
