Announcements: The Equity Academies are not currently being offered at this time. If you are interested in future opportunities, please complete the form below.

Originally developed in partnership with Northshore School District and the Northshore Schools Foundation, UW Bothell’s School of Educational Studies is pleased to offer Equity Academies, with a focus on racial and educational justice, to all-K12 educators in Washington State. The Equity Academies are designed for educators seeking to lead instruction and support student success through the lens of equity and justice.

Equity Academies will guide educators to:

  • Reflect on and connect critical intersectionalities in educational equity.
  • Build and enhance collaboration for instructional equity at a building-level.
  • Prepare to inform and lead broader, district-wide efforts to increase instruction that best reflects the diverse needs of all students.
  • Create opportunities to engage the district’s youth and community voices.

The Equity Academies were developed in alignment with the UW Bothell LEDE (Leadership Development for Educators) educational leadership program framework. A series of once-monthly modules will be led by LEDE faculty, all experienced practitioners in K12 education and leadership.

Organizing Module: The Historical and Philosophical Contexts of Educational Equity: A Primer

Date: February 1, 2023
Time: 3:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m

All enrollees participate in this introductory module, which provides the foundation for the three academies being offered. The organizing module is designed to assist educators in making critical historical connections to the contemporary struggle for educational equity across minoritized communities in the United States, for the purpose of situating their work as educators and instructional leaders within that struggle. Participants will engage critical and intersectional theories of practice that will assist them in gaining the conceptual knowledge that informs equitable educator and instructional leadership praxis in the context of their buildings, districts, and communities.

Attending Multiple Academies and Action Research Projects

Academy alumni, participants who have completed an academy in a prior year, are welcome to enroll in a different academy this year. Participants who completed the initial Organizing Module in any year will not need to complete it again.

The academy experience and curriculum are designed so those participating in multiple academies will build upon and deepen their knowledge. Projects developed as a result of participation in any of the three academies may be carried over with continued focus into another academy. This will provide participants with additional framing for developing potential action research projects, and the specific equity issues they have taken up.

University of Washington Bothell LEDE faculty will provide some additional advisement on action research projects stemming from this work.

Textbooks and Materials

Textbooks are free to all participants. Instructions on textbook pick-up will be included in your registration confirmation.

Clock Hours

Washington State educators who complete the Organizing Module and one Equity Academy are eligible for 16 clock hours for no additional cost. Partial clock hours are possible. All clock hours will be awarded at the end of each academy. Clock hours fulfill the Washington State requirement for equity-based school practices for both teachers (15) and administrators (10).
