Chemistry professor Lori Robins and students Luis Contreras and Virkamal Dhaliwal helped the Briotech company of Woodinville prove its product is effective in destroying prions, the abnormal proteins that cause dementia disorders such as mad cow disease and Alzheimer’s.

Mentoring new researcher, innovation
Mentors at University of Washington Bothell helped a promising high school student start work on an augmented reality therapy for amputees, a project that won him $90,000 in science fair scholarships. Afeef Sheikh is a senior at Redmond’s Tesla STEM High School looking forward to continuing his research in college.

New ocean engineering minor ahead
Assistant Professor Shima Abadi, School of STEM, is developing an ocean engineering minor at UW Bothell that could start with the 2017-18 school year. It would be the first minor offered in the mechanical engineering program. It would help graduates find jobs and the marine industry find qualified engineers.

Competitive searches bring outstanding faculty
The University of Washington Bothell welcomes 21 new faculty hires in time for the 2016-2017 school year. Eleven are in School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS). Nine are in School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM). And, one is in the School of Business. Fourteen are lecturers.

Students have impact on engineering program
Students such as Cameron Whalen in the 2-year-old mechanical engineering program are enhancing their education and career prospects through a student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. A select group managed a tour last spring of the headquarters of Blue Origin, the spaceship company founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and known for its privacy.

University of Washington Bothell mechanical engineering students delivered a solar-powered cooler June 10 to their customers at a Woodinville farm. It was on time, on budget and operating as designed at 38 degrees.

Women dominating IMD program
For the second straight year, women lead in the number of the students admitted to the popular Interactive Media Design (IMD) major at University of Washington Bothell. Out of 32 admits for next fall, 20 are female and 12 are male. Interactive Media Design adviser Keiko Miyamoto said the first two cohorts in the two-year program that started in 2013 were dominated by male students.

Students have a hit at business pitch
A team co-led by a University of Washington Bothell student Adam Zhu won a $2,500 award in the Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship business plan competition. The Aquapel team won the Smukowski Family Best Sustainable Advantage award that goes to the best sustainable product at the UW’s Foster School of Business competition.
