Time-honored traditions for the Class of 2017
University of Washington Bothell connects with time-honored traditions in its commencement ceremony at 4 p.m. June 13 at Safeco Field in Seattle. Students build Mars robot for NASA contest
UW Bothell’s Trickfire Robotics team is competing in the NASA Robotic Mining Competition May 22-26 at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The mission is to build a robot to mine ice granules on Mars for water people will need to survive on the Red Planet.

Employers seek UW Bothell students at job fair
Representatives of more than 70 companies found nearly 400 students with resumes in hand Wednesday at the Spring Job and Internship Fair. The event was one of the biggest job fairs yet on campus. It took space in both the North Creek Events Center and the Activities and Recreation Center.

First hackathon in series targets campus garden
The first in a planned series of University of Washington Bothell community hackathons aims to make improvements at the garden sprouting on campus between the north parking garage and the sports fields. The Garden Innovation Challenge on April 21 is the work of the Hackathon Series Committee, a partnership of seven student clubs and organizations.

UW Bothell team in Imagine Cup US finals
A team of University of Washington Bothell students is competing in the national finals for the Imagine Cup, the prestigious Microsoft software contest. Computing software systems seniors Darong Leng, Miyu Kimura and Shen Li are creating an “ultra-reality space” that allows people from different locations to interact using multiple devices.

The first time Gautam Kumar submitted a cybersecurity paper to a conference, it “failed spectacularly." But with assistance from the University of Washington Bothell Writing and Communications Center, Kumar succeeded in having the paper accepted at a conference in Portugal where he presented his work.

After taking Denise Vaughan’s introduction to debate class, Aaron Yared joined the UW Bothell debate team, improved his classroom performance, changed his career goal to law and won third place in the Pi Kappa Delta National Comprehensive Speech and Debate Tournament.

Internships-Veronica Cheang: Selling tea to China
For an internship course in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, Veronica Cheang was a marketing intern with World Trade Center Tacoma. She conducted research for a company that wanted to sell tea to China, the world’s largest tea exporter. It was a challenge, she says.

Native Girls Code, helping diversify STEM
After completing her community psychology degree with a human rights minor at the University of Washington Bothell, Shawn Peterson created a way to combine her education with her passion. She helped start Native Girls Code with the goal of introducing indigenous teen girls to opportunities in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
