Marc Servetnick, one of the leaders in the University of Washington Bothell’s School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, has been named its interim dean, effective Sept. 1.
Servetnick, professor and chair of the STEM Division of Biological Sciences, will fill the position during a search to replace founding dean Elaine Scott, who is departing this summer to become dean of Santa Clara University’s School of Engineering.
Servetnick has been a faculty member at UW Bothell since 2008 and joined the School of STEM when it was created in 2013. Previously, Servetnick taught for 15 years at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, where he served as chair of the Biology Department. He also served as a program director at the National Science Foundation.
“Marc is highly regarded by his colleagues, and his long tenure at UW Bothell will serve the school well in this interim role,” said Chancellor Wolf Yeigh. “I am confident in his ability to lead the School of STEM over the course of the next year, particularly in the critically important design process for our next academic building, which will be dedicated to STEM programs.”
Under Scott’s direction, the School of STEM moved into the new Discovery Hall in 2014. In less than six years, the number of students has almost tripled. Scott also has worked to increase the number of women in STEM fields: 35% of UW Bothell’s STEM graduates and 40% of STEM faculty are women.
Servetnick said, “I am honored to lead the school through the transition to a new dean. I look forward to working with our dedicated STEM faculty and staff in the year ahead.”
