Federal agencies recently redesignated the University of Washington as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research. The center is located at the Applied Physics Lab at the UW in Seattle and managed by the Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity (CIAC), which is headquartered at UW Bothell.
The designation, through 2024, comes from the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. It makes the UW eligible for special programs, grants and conferences sponsored by the federal government, said Barbara Endicott-Popovsky, CIAC executive director.
“We are proud of our role in supporting national cybersecurity and providing research opportunities for faculty and students,” said UW Bothell Chancellor Wolf Yeigh.
Research is conducted across multiple departments at the University of Washington, including UW Bothell.
The UW also is a designated Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education. CIAC works across the university to prepare students for careers protecting computer systems from accidents, hackers, viruses and other security threats.
UW Bothell currently offers several degree options in cybersecurity. They include a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Software Engineering with the information assurance and cybersecurity option, and a Master of Science in Cyber Security Engineering.
