About 200 students and members of the public are choosing to spend a spring Saturday indoors at a daylong cybersecurity summit at the University of Washington Bothell. This first-time event on May 13 is hosted by the student chapter of the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP).
Registration filled up for the free OWASP Academic Summit for Information Security (OASIS) Saturday in Discovery Hall, but the chapter is also offering a two-hour workshop on Friday, May 12. A computer scientist from the FBI Cyber Task Force in Seattle will demonstrate how to analyze a real malware sample. Registration is required.
Attendees at the Saturday workshop will hear from industry professionals and learn about tools they use to protect their digital information from hackers. In addition to hands-on sessions, participants can network with the local security community. The workshop is sponsored by the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) Puget Sound Chapter and Apex Systems.
UW Bothell is home to the Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity (CIAC).The National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security have designated the University of Washington a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education.
UW Bothell also offers several degrees in cybersecurity: a Bachelor of Science in computer science and software engineering with the information assurance and cybersecurity option and a Master of Science in cyber security engineering.
