A member of the University of Washington Bothell Speech and Debate Team, Aaron Yared, took a third place in the Pi Kappa Delta National Comprehensive Speech and Debate Tournament.
The junior in law, economics and public policy won third place in the Novice Division International Public Debate Association style debate during the completion over spring break in Boise, Idaho. Yared, left, also took a superior award in Novice Division IPDA, putting him in the top 10 percent of debaters in nation.
The tournament hosted 74 schools and over 2,000 entries in speech and debate events. It is our most competitive tournament, said Denise Vaughan, director of forensics and faculty member in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences.
Nate Blanchard, right, a senior in law, economics and public policy, was awarded a superior rating in Interviewing, an event where students participate in mock interviews to hone their business skills.
Other members of the team are Caleb Lohrmann, a junior in computer science; Estefania Medina, a junior in media and communications studies; Cygourney Eugene, a junior in media and communications studies;, and Hussain Altamimi, a senior in law, economics and public policy.
This was a week of intense competition and this team did incredibly well, Vaughan said.
The year is not quite over, Vaughan says. The 2017 Northwest Parliamentary Debate Championships will be held on the UW Bothell campus April 22-23. New students are always welcome.
