Endowment fund to honor memory of Anna Bui, University of Washington Bothell student and victim of Mukilteo shooting
BOTHELL, Washington – The family of Anna Bui, the University of Washington Bothell student who was fatally shot at a gathering in Mukilteo, is starting an endowment fund in her memory that would offer scholarships to other students at the University.
Anna’s older siblings, David and Anny Bui, say the study abroad scholarship will assist students whose interests are similar to their adventurous sister’s – those who want to experience what the world has to offer and, at the same time, enrich the lives of others.
A study abroad can last anywhere from a few weeks to a year. The Anna Bui World of Hope Fund will help students who might otherwise be unable to take advantage of such a transformational experience.
Anna didn’t study abroad, but she did travel in Europe for three weeks over the summer, much of the time with her sister. “And that’s the happiest I’ve seen her,” Anny said. Anna wanted to study abroad to improve her high school Spanish.
The endowment is one way to give back in Anna’s name, said David Bui.
“Anna always had her way with people; it’s hard not to like her. It could be anyone from her employer to someone she just met traveling the world,” he said.
A few weeks after her summer travel, the 19-year-old Everett resident was attending a gathering with friends from Kamiak High School when she and two other people were killed.
That also was just after Anna started working weekends at a senior home in Bothell. She was proud of earning a certificate as a nursing assistant and wanted to earn a degree in nursing. She was inspired by seeing nurses who had helped her grandmother during a hospital stay, said David Bui.
“She made an impact on everyone. I can see that in the community coming together. So we have to do something for her,” said Anny Bui.
