The history lecture by Dan Berger that was filmed Feb. 18 by a C-SPAN crew at the University of Washington Bothell debuts this weekend on the C-SPAN3 cable channel.
Incarceration in the Late 20th Century examines the rise of mass incarceration in the United States and the politics behind it. It’s scheduled to air Saturday, April 30, at 8 p.m. and again at midnight, also on May 8 at 12 p.m. and May 9 at 4 a.m., all times EDT on C-Span3.
Immediately after the first airing the entire video will be available through the C-Span website.
C-SPAN also podcasts the programs in the classroom series (usually available on the Tuesday following the debut).
For people who don't routinely receive C-SPAN3, it streams 24 hours a day when you log in with your TV provider credentials.
This Lectures in History episode comes from the Introduction to African-American Studies (BIS256) class taught by Berger, assistant professor in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences.
Berger is the author of “Captive Nation: Black Prison Organizing in the Civil Rights Era.”
He says his research is interested in bottoms-up explorations of identity, politics, activism and the state. Berger says he sees his role as a teacher in helping students think critically and creatively – about both course material and society at large.
