Seven faculty members from the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and about 20 University of Washington Bothell students, alumni and friends are leading an International Women’s Day celebration with a day-long public presentation of their work at the Northwest Film Forum in Seattle.
The event on March 5 marks the second year the Northwest Film Forum has partnered with UW Bothell for performances, screenings and conversations in celebration of the March 8 International Women’s Day.
Victoria Breckwich Vasquez, assistant professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies, will be showcasing a training video about work site sexual harassment prevention.
The audience can gain a sense of the experience by hearing from survivors of sexual violence, said Breckwich Vasquez, who also is director of community engagement and education at the Pacific Northwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center at the University of Washington.
She’s part of a panel, facilitated by UW Bothell faculty member Kari Lerum, called
Policing Women, Generating Justice.
“My focus is necessarily on the prevention of occupational and environmental health risks facing women workers in agriculture,” Breckwich Vasquez said.
She sees the panel as part of her work engaging students in discussions of the farm labor industry in a “culturally humble way that honors the concerns and issues of those communities we work with.”
Other parts of the film forum event include a film screening and theater workshop as well as poetry and fiction reading.
School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences faculty Minda Martin and Deborah Hathaway are bringing their Women and Film and Improvisation and Applied Theatre classes together for a screening of a student film and interactive theater performance, raising issues of gender inequity in cinema.
UW Bothell faculty Sarah Dowling and Alka Kurian will participate in the poetry and fiction reading along with students from UW Bothell MFA in Creative Writing and Poetics.
One ticket gives the public access to all the day-long events.
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic and political achievements of women. This year it also marks a call to accelerate gender parity.
