The killing of Cecil the lion last year in Tanzania sparked worldwide outrage and condemnation of big game hunting. In his new book, “Selling the Serengeti,” University of Washington Bothell Associate Professor Benjamin Gardner studies the influence of safari tourism – ecotourism or big-game hunting — on land rights, market forces and culture. Gardner has two decades of experience with the Maasai people. He is associate professor of global studies, cultural studies and environmental studies in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at UW Bothell. He also is adjunct associate professor of geography at the University of Washington where he chairs the African Studies Program at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies. Read more
